Caring Homes has installed its first Tovertafel (‘magic table’ in Dutch) in its Mellish House care home, a leading dementia care establishment.
The Tovertafel is an award winning innovation from the Netherlands, which is renowned for its cutting edge approach to dementia care. The technology contains a series of games for people living with mid to late stage dementia. It has been designed to encourage instinctive participation, inviting engagement and stimulating a level of physical and social activity rarely seen in people living with dementia in the later stages of their journey.
Mellish House, part of the Caring Home group, is a CQC certified outstanding care home. A specialist dementia care home, Mellish House has been designed to meet the University of Stirling’s standards for dementia care; the renowned world leader in the field.
The Tovertafel creates a fun, safe environment for all residents. The games are formulated with the intention to trigger a sense of reminiscence among players in order to encourage stimulation socially, cognitively and physically. As light simulations, games are projected onto a table and include gardening, fishing and popping balloons.
Glenda Davison, activity co-ordinator at Mellish House Care Home says, “When I read about the Tovertafel, I was blown away with the possibilities it held for our residents. It was wonderful to see the community come together to raise the money so quickly and make sure that Mellish House remains at the forefront of dementia innovation and care. We are thrilled to see how our residents develop with the Tovertafel and continue to live a high quality of life.”
John Ramsay, the CEO of Shift 8 Limited – the company which brought the Tovertafel to the UK – says: “We are delighted that Mellish House have installed the Tovertafel. As an outstanding care home, that prides itself on dementia care, we are thrilled to further enhance the quality of life that residents enjoy here. It’s been incredibly moving seeing the residents interact with the Tovertafel games and each other.”
