Marking World Alzheimer’s Month

Borough Care is marking World Alzheimer’s Month as Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia affect many of its residents.

September 2019 marks the eighth World Alzheimer’s Month, which is an international campaign to raise awareness and challenge the stigma that surrounds dementia. Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia among older adults.

World Alzheimer’s Day falls on 21 September each year. To help people share their experiences and get support from its experienced carers, Borough Care will be hosting a special Alzheimer’s Day afternoon tea at all its homes on Saturday 21 September.

Family and friends of residents have been invited to enjoy afternoon tea and chat to Borough Care staff, who will be on hand to answer any dementia related questions. People can also make a donation to Alzheimer’s Society. Some of the homes will also have other activities taking place during the day for people to enjoy, including games, music and quizzes.

Borough Care has over 20 years of experience supporting people with dementia. All Borough Care employees, in all roles, have access to ongoing dementia training and education, to help them support residents and their families.

Dr Mark Ward, CEO at Borough Care, says: “At Borough Care we believe that good dementia care relies on a positive and flexible culture that supports and respects people. Each person’s memories are unique to that individual so we believe it is essential our staff get to know every resident by talking to them about their lives and experiences. We also encourage residents to participate in a range of different dementia friendly activities, from trips out to nostalgic haunts to exercise classes and pet therapy sessions.

“Our homes have been specifically designed to help those with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia live as independently as possible. All our homes have dementia friendly signage, easy to remember street names and themed bedroom doors to help orientate those who can become easily confused.

"Some of our homes have been designed as small villages, with residents having their own coffee shops, pubs or cinemas, which help give a real sense of living in a community. In all our homes we’ve created a homely, comfortable environment, with access to secure outdoor space, for residents to enjoy, feel safe and benefit from interacting with other people.”
