West Midlands home creates dementia-friendly community

HC-One’s Dovedale Court Care Home in Wednesbury, West Midlands, has created a dementia-friendly community consisting of various shops to engage residents.

Dovedale Court has created shops including a florist, cleaning station, woodwork and tool station, and post office, plus an outdoor pub and food area for residents to enjoy.

It is hoped that the dementia-friendly community will provide a range of positive benefits for residents living with dementia at Dovedale Court, including enhanced cognitive stimulation and increased social interaction through participating in a Friday shop routine, where residents can look forward to going to the shops to make their purchases.

Dawn Allen, home manager at HC-One’s Dovedale Court Care Home, said: “I am delighted that we have been able to create a dementia friendly community within Dovedale Court. This will have a number of positive benefits for our residents living with dementia including providing them with opportunities to experience feelings of normalcy, personal value and to reminisce.”
