A new 75-bed, Oakland Care home in Harpenden, Hertfordshire, designed by RDT Architects, has been granted planning consent.
RDT have worked closely with Oakland Care to ensure functionality, sustainability, and seamless integration of the new care home into an urban setting. With 75 bedrooms and indoors and outdoors amenity spaces, the new care home is intended to revitalise the site, which formerly housed a vehicle repair centre.
Richard Dooley, development director at Oakland Care, said: “Oakland Care are delighted to have received planning approval for the 75-bedroom care home in Harpenden. The planning process has been a real team effort with RDT Architects, DLA Planning, and Jarvis Homes all being integral to the approval process. The Harpenden development forms part of our strategic growth plan and will add to our current portfolio of ten homes located within the South East of England.
“The Harpenden project is particularly exciting for us with it being our first home to be powered using electric only. The operational home will use a mix of solar panels and air source heat pumps to provide heating and lighting to the new home. The move to an all-electric power source further confirms our company wide commitment to ESG.
“We are now in the final stage of appointing a contractor and are aiming to commence construction in June 2024 and open the home in Summer 2026.”
