Green care: essential to future-proofing the sector

Johann van Zyl, group CEO of specialist care provider Cornerstone Healthcare, looks at why sustainable developments are key to a secure future for the care sector

It is just a few months until the completion of Cornerstone Healthcare’s purpose-built care home, The Burren, in the South West of England – a home with sustainability at its heart.

It will be powered by solar panels, has a living roof, and is built to the highest energy efficient standards that will keep it warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

The Burren is a development that is tailored to the needs of our client group, who have challenging behaviours associated with complex neurological and mental health needs. But it is also very much designed to meet the needs of the community in which it is located – not only in terms of the physical space, but also the economics of the area and the wellbeing of those who live and work around the home.
