The Abbeyfield Reigate Society has marked five decades of support for its residents and older people in the local community with a celebratory anniversary event.
Residents and their families, as well as friends and volunteers of Abbeyfield House sheltered house and the Mayor and Mayoress of Reigate & Banstead, enjoyed a special lunch to celebrate the occasion.
Abbeyfield Reigate is a not-for-profit charity that provides independent supported living for up to 10 residents at Abbeyfield House in Reigate. It is affiliated to the national charity The Abbeyfield Society, which carries on the legacy of Abbeyfield Society founder Richard Carr-Gomm in providing a safe and secure home environment where residents can find friendship and support, enabling them to live full independent lives.
The Mayor, Cllr Eddy Humphreys, said: “It was wonderful to meet the staff and residents of Abbeyfield House. It is great to see that this type of accommodation is available to older people who would like a bit of support, but also value their independence.”
Leonora Corden, chair of trustees, said, “We are very proud of the Society’s accomplishments over the years and believe it is a huge achievement to have continued to update and modernise the house since 1973. That means we can fully meet the needs of older people in the neighbourhood who would like some support but also value their independence. We are looking forward to the next 50 years!”
Tina Wooster, Abbeyfield House manager, commented: “Everyone had a great afternoon, it was absolutely wonderful to be a part of the celebration, bringing everyone together really does sum up what Abbeyfield Reigate is all about.”
