Preparing adult care apprentices for their assessments

Paul Kelly, qualifications director at Professional Assessment (PAL), shares his top five tips on how to ensure your apprentices have the support they need to pass with flying colours

As the care sector continues to be hit by staff shortages, training has become more important than ever to ensure that care providers enable workers and residents thrive. For care homes struggling to meet any property management, design, and maintenance skills gaps in their teams, offering apprenticeships for staff at all levels of the business will help solve this problem. Apprenticeships also foster loyalty by showing that care providers are prepared to invest money and effort in boosting the skills and qualifications of their workforce.

If you are considering introducing an apprenticeship programme or are thinking about how you might best support an existing apprentice when it comes to their assessments, there are steps you can take to provide the learning and development opportunities that will help them perform to the best of their abilities.

National apprenticeship standards in adult care have come a long way in recent years. Although the relevant diploma must still be achieved over the course of the programme, the apprenticeship standard and end-point assessment are designed to ensure apprentices acquire a broader understanding of their industry and develop the skills, knowledge, and behaviours they need to be job-ready on completion.
