Residents and staff at Broomhills care home in Rochford are asking their community to join them in their ‘Knit my community’ initiative.
The goal is to knit together 65 scarfs, each a meter long each and 50 stitches wide, to represent the 65-mile radius of Rochford. Once all the scarfs are complete, the team at Broomhills, which is part of the Runwood group, will join them together to make one enormous scarf.
Once the scarves have been made, the team plan to lay them out in the garden at Broomhills, joining them together as one big scarf, and inviting everybody who took part to see the finished article. The Broomhills team are then hoping to donate each individual scarf to people within the local area that are in need.
The lengthy scarf will, say Broomhills, represent ‘a warm and comforting wrap around the community, bringing love, connection, and friendship’. Those invited to take part include other Runwood care homes in the Rochford area, dementia day centres, the local Women’s Institute, and the local school.
Leigh Anne Cowling, home manager at Broomhills, said: “Myself, residents, and the team at Broomhills are very excited to start this project and to invite those within Rochford to join us in making the scarfs. Our talented residents will be able to use their brilliant knitting skills and know that it’ll be benefiting our wider community. We cannot wait to show everybody the finished result and following its success, we hope to continue with more community initiatives in the future.”
