Nonsuch Abbeyfield, a new independent living with extra care scheme located in Ewell, Surrey, has been officially opened by Abbeyfield Southern Oaks Society (ASOS).
Celebrating on 8 April, residents, friends, trustees, and dignitaries were treated to a champagne reception. Despite the official opening of the village having been delayed due to the pandemic, Nonsuch Abbeyfield is already nearing full occupancy. The village boasts a range of facilities, including a cinema, restaurant, club room, hair salon, community garden, and fitness suite.
The Mayor of Ewell, Peter O’Donovan, oversaw celebrations, which included the ribbon being cut by journalist and television personality Andrea McLean, and ASOS trustee Graham Walker gave a brief history of the Society, which has over 370 homes and houses in the UK and overseas and supports 8,000 older people, thanking those who have contributed to ASOS’ success since it was established in 1956.
Resident Ray Kasey said, “I have lived here from the first day and enjoyed it ever since. I get on with the other residents and have three good friends with whom I reminisce about our sporting days. I enjoy the activities, including the Tuesday night film club, and use the gym regularly. With everything I need on my doorstep, I rarely need to leave.”
Volunteer Anne Carrington added: “The people who are here represent the story of Nonsuch Abbeyfield. I grew up with the organisation and it is wonderful to be here today to celebrate a new chapter.”
