A new 50-apartment development has been opened in South Gloucestershire by not-for-profit provider Housing 21 as part of its Extra Care initiative.
The £9.5 million Edward Jenner Court in Emersons Green will allow residents over the age of 55 to live independently with the reassurance of a 24/7 on-site care team. The project has been delivered by Housing 21, a national leading provider of retirement living and extra care, in partnership with South Gloucestershire Council and Vistry Partnerships, using funding from Homes England.
The apartments can be purchased or rented by people over 55 who have a connection to South Gloucestershire. They come with the benefit of a housing manager able to assist residents with repairs, event suggestions, and benefit claims, and an on-site care team for both planned and emergency care. Facilities include a communal lounge, restaurant, and hair salon, all of which will be available for use by the local community.
Housing 21’s head of extra care, Tracy Jones, said: “We are delighted to officially open Edward Jenner Court and welcome residents. Our Extra Care properties strike a unique balance as they allow residents the freedom to live independently in their own home, with the option to access on-site communal facilities and care support if and when required.
“The apartments are designed to a high-quality standard with all of the modern touches that allow residents to live comfortably in their own home, while the scheme itself has facilities including a communal lounge, hair salon and restaurant, as well as a guest apartment for visiting family and friends.”
Cllr Ben Stokes, South Gloucestershire’s cabinet member for adults and housing, commented: “The council has been working closely with partners such as Housing 21 and the Lyde Green Community Association to deliver this scheme, and we also provided £250,000 of key funding.
“Extra Care housing such as this enables people over the age of 55 to live independently with communal facilities on offer and care assistance available at close hand if needed. Being able to enjoy the privacy of your own apartment whilst knowing that a 24-hour on-site care team is available provides peace of mind for its residents, and for their families.”
Marc Thompson, managing director at Vistry Partnerships West, added: “We are delighted to have worked in partnership with Housing 21 to deliver this high-quality, independent living development in Bristol. As one of the largest providers of affordable homes in the UK, we’re keen to play our role providing more mixed tenure homes, including Extra Care and for rent, and Edward Jenner Court delivers both of these.”
