When it comes to designing care home environments, new research by Circadacare shows that providers must pay attention to lighting, and how it can affect their residents.
We all know what the benefits and effects of light are – how it affects our mood and our health, and how the daily cycle of natural light gives structure to our day. Therefore, when somebody old and frail, or a person living with dementia, finds themselves in a care home environment, with limited exposure to the natural light that many of us probably take for granted, it can have a profound effect on their quality of life. It is important, then, for care providers to consider how light is used in such environments. After all, none of us would want to spend day after day in a place where the only light was harsh and artificial.
With this in mind, software company amBX, known for creating smart, connected lighting experiences, recently published new research from its partner Circadacare.
The research shows the impact of light on older people and people living with dementia. The report highlights many benefits that can be achieved from monitoring and controlling the circadian rhythm of lighting fixtures that a resident is exposed to – in effect bringing artificial light closer to the body’s natural, 24-hour cycle.
