Cornerstone Healthcare has secured a loan from Virgin Money to develop an 80-bed ‘eco’ care home in Bristol.
The care home will be designed for high thermal efficiency so it retains heat in the winter and cools in the summer.
Solar panels will be installed on the roof to supply electricity and use eco-friendly air source heat pumps to heat or cool the building.
In addition, the facility’s roof garden will benefit local wildlife and be aligned with a sustainable drainage system that manages rainwater attenuation.
“Both Cornerstone and Virgin Money are committed to reducing carbon dioxide emissions, making this a perfect collaboration and preferably the first of many,” said Cornerstone chief executive Johann van Zyl.
Virgin Money senior director of health & social care Graham Harper added: "This new 80 bed facility is going to be a great additional for the region and is due to open in 2023.”
Work on the site has begun at the care home, which is expected to create 140 jobs locally.
