Cornerstone Healthcare has received planning consent for an 80-bed service within the Imperial Park development in the south of Bristol.
Due to be completed in autumn 2023, the £13m care home is the first in a partnership between specialist care home architect and project management consultancy Northstar and sustainability experts Sustainable Construction Services (SCS).
“This ‘green’ building has been designed to be thermally efficient, meaning it will retain heat in the winter and stay cool in summer for longer,” said Cornerstone chief executive Johann van Zyl.
“The home will have solar panels on the roof to provide electricity and use environmentally friendly air source heat pumps to heat or cool the building,” he added.
The home, which will bring 140 jobs to the local area, will also have a living roof. This rooftop garden feature for residents will benefit local wildlife alongside a sustainable drainage system that will manage rainwater attenuation.
Danny Sharpe of care home designers Northstar said “We are on course for a certification of ‘Excellent’ from the World’s leading sustainability assessment body – the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM).”
The project is partly funded by Cornerstone and its equity investors, Ignite Growth.
