Sajid Javid has replaced the disgraced Matt Hancock as secretary of state for health and social care.
Javid has a long history in government, serving as chancellor from July 2019 to February 2020, home secretary from April 2018 to July 2019 and local government secretary from July 2016 to April 2018.
The Conservative MP for Bromsgrove’s other former government roles include President of the Board of Trade, culture secretary, financial secretary to the Treasury, and economic secretary to the Treasury.
“I’m incredibly honoured to take up the post of Health and Social Care Secretary, particularly during such an important moment in our recovery from Covid-19,” said Javid.
“This position comes with a huge responsibility and I will do everything I can to deliver for the people of this great country,” he added.
“Thanks to the fantastic efforts of our NHS and social care staff who work tirelessly every day, and our phenomenal vaccination programme, we have made enormous progress in the battle against this dreadful disease.”
Javid continued: “I want our country to get out of this pandemic and that will be my most immediate priority.”
