Care home resident deaths linked to Covid top 30,000

Care home resident deaths involving Covid-19 in England and Wales have surpassed 30,000 according to the latest data by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

Figures showed a total of 30,110 Covid-related care home deaths were registered between the week ending 20 March (week 12, 2020) and the week ending 15 January (week two, 2021).

The peak of care home resident deaths involving Covid was during the week ending 24 April 2020 (week 17) with 3,679.

The ONS data showed a total of 137,414 care residents have died from all causes in the corresponding weeks since the start of the pandemic.

That compares with the 108,637 five-year average total number of care home resident deaths between week 12 and week two in England and Wales between 2015 and 2019.

In the week ending 15 January 2021, 1,719 care home resident Covid-related deaths were recorded in England and Wales, up from 1,370 a week earlier and 745 a week before that.

The most deaths involving Covid recorded during week two 2021 were in south-east England with 427, followed by eastern England with 282.

North-east England recorded the lowest tally during the week ending 15 January with 83 deaths.
