The number of deaths involving Covid-19 in care homes in England and Wales has risen to 14,398 - an increase of 376 on the previous week - according to the latest data published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
In England, the number of deaths involving Covid-19 in care homes that were registered by 12 June was 13,735, up 367 from a week earlier. The previous weekly rise in England was 540, and 686 before that.
In Wales, the total number of care home deaths was 663 as of 12 June, up nine on last week. The previous weekly rise in Wales was 28, and 35 before that.
In total, ONS data showed 48,538 involving Covid-19 occurred in England and Wales up to 12 June, up 789 from a week earlier. The previous weekly rise was 2,001.
Data compiled by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) meanwhile showed 189 deaths from Covid-19 in England in the week up to 19 June and a total of 12,075.
Whereas the ONS reports deaths where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate, the CQC notifications rely on the statement of the care home provider that the virus was suspected or confirmed.
The Care Inspectorate Wales meanwhile recorded 490 deaths involving Covid-19 in care homes in Wales, of which one occurred in the week up to 19 June.
