The number of deaths involving Covid-19 in care homes in England and Wales has risen to 14,022 – an increase of 568 on the previous week - according to the latest data published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
In England, the number of deaths involving Covid-19 in care homes registered by 5 June was 13,368, up 540 from a week earlier. The previous weekly rise was 686.
In Wales, the total number of care home deaths was 654 as of 5 June, up 28 on last week. The previous weekly rise in Wales was 35.
The care home death rate continues to decline. The previous weekly ONS care home dataset showed a rise of 721 deaths in England and Wales and 1,089 prior to that.
In total, ONS data showed 47,749 deaths involving Covid-19 occurred in England and Wales up to 5 June, up 2,001 from a week earlier.
Data compiled by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) meanwhile showed 266 deaths from Covid-19 in England in the week up to 12 June and a total of 11,880.
Whereas the ONS reports deaths where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate, the CQC notifications rely on the statement of the care home provider that Covid-19 was suspected or confirmed.
The Care Inspectorate Wales meanwhile recorded 490 deaths involving Covid-19 in care homes in Wales, of which four occurred in the week up to 12 June
