The number of deaths involving Covid-19 in care homes in England and Wales has risen to 13,454 – an increase of 721 on the previous week - according to the latest data published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
In England, the number of deaths involving Covid-19 in care homes that were registered by 29 May was 12,828, up 686 from a week earlier.
In Wales the total number of care home deaths was 626 as of 29 May, up 35 on the previous week.
The ONS data showed the care home death rate continues to decline. The previous ONS care home dataset showed a weekly rise of 1,089 deaths in England and Wales and 1,661 prior to that.
In total, 45,748 deaths involving Covid-19 were registered in England and Wales up to 29 May, up 1,911 from 22 May.
Data compiled by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) meanwhile showed 424 deaths from Covid-19 in England in the week up to 5 June and a total of 11,614.
Whereas the ONS reports deaths where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate, the CQC notifications rely on the statement of the care home provider that Covid-19 was suspected or confirmed.
Care Inspectorate Wales meanwhile recorded 486 deaths involving Covid-19 in care homes in Wales. of which 24 occurred in the week up to 5 June.
