The cost of replacing a carpet is typically twice that of regular maintenance and inhouse cleaning will result in an even greater saving, says Howard O’Brien, joint managing director and head of sales and service partner relations, Traffik UK
Carpet has a vital role in creating a homely, therapeutic environment for care home residents and staff and it is therefore an important asset that should be regularly and effectively maintained. Healthcare carpets are designed to be exceptionally resilient and to endure the heavy demands placed upon them daily. However, despite their technical properties and endurance capabilities, they are not self-cleaning and require a reasonable investment in terms of maintenance to protect them and keep them in optimal condition.
Both carpets and hard floors endure high levels of use in care homes due to the heavy footfall and equipment such as trolleys, walking frames and wheelchairs. Contamination and stains from dirt and soil, food and drink, medication and bodily fluids is also likely to be commonplace in a care home environment
Good quality commercial carpet should last for years, but it is often replaced early due to a lack of or incorrect maintenance. Too many carpets and hard floors therefore end up consigned to landfill much sooner than necessary, resulting in vast and unnecessary expense and of course, having a significant environmental impact.
