Fairmile Grange marks World Music Day

Fairmile Grange in Christchurch invited a number of guests into the care home to join in with the celebrations to mark BBC World Music Day on Thursday 26 September.

BBC World Music Day is an annual event which aims to connect communities and generations across the UK. The theme of this year’s event was music and wellbeing.

Over the course of the day, the team at Fairmile Grange organised a range of activities for residents at the care home to enjoy. This included welcoming children from local childminders, Shining Stars and 2nd Home, who came in to sing, as well as The Land Girls, a professional entertainment singing duo from Poole, who performed a range of 1950s and 1960s classics. The day ended with a performance from Fairmile Grange’s very own choir.

Kim Butters, wellbeing manager of Fairmile Grange, says: “Everyone at Fairmile Grange had such a lovely time celebrating BBC World Music Day. Music and memory are a powerful connector. Whether it's traditional songs or the more modern hits, music has been proven to stimulate and bring back long-forgotten memories, especially for those with dementia. It can also reduce stress, help maintain speech and language, and motivates people to get moving.”

“We would like to say a huge thank you to all those who came along and got involved in making the day even more special for our residents. It is fantastic when we have an opportunity to bring the community together, especially over music, which is a universal language that connects people to one and other.”
