Key maintenance advice for lifts and platforms

Following several serious incidents involving opening lift landing doors, Nick Mellor, managing director of the Lift and Escalator Industry Association (LEIA), answers some key questions on what care home managers need to know to keep residents safe

The Lift and Escalator Industry Association (LEIA) has collaborated with the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) on a campaign to bring key issues to the attention of those with responsibility for lifts and lifting platforms. These are highlighted by the following questions and answers.

What are the issues you want to bring to care home owners’ attention?

LEIA is very worried about accidents resulting from the misuse of lift / lifting platform landing door unlocking keys. When a new lift or lifting platform is fitted, a landing door unlocking key should be provided. The unlocking key is used to release trapped passengers. This is a procedure the lift engineer is trained to carry out and there are many potential dangers if it is not undertaken by a trained and competent person. The care home owner or manager is responsible for the safe keeping of the unlocking key and should only issue it to a trained and competent person when necessary.
