Borough Care is supporting Dementia Action Week (20-26 May) with a range of activities for residents at its 11 homes across Stockport.
Organised by Alzheimer’s Society, Dementia Action Week unites people to take action and improve the lives of people living with dementia. Borough Care has over 20 years of experience supporting people with dementia.
This Dementia Action Week, Alzheimer’s Society is encouraging everyone to take action by starting a conversation; whether it’s calling a relative with dementia or visiting a neighbour for a chat. Borough Care provides many opportunities for its residents to interact with members of the wider community, to chat, share stories and participate in activities together.
Dr Mark Ward, chief executive officer at Borough Care, says: “It is important for a person with dementia to interact with a wide range of people, and we find spending time with children in particular really lifts their spirits.
"We have lots of intergenerational activity taking place at our homes, where residents have the opportunity to engage with young children through regular visits from nursery and child-minding groups. Intergenerational contact helps enrich the lives of older people and children alike. The relationships that form through chatting, playing games and singing songs gives them a sense of purpose and helps improve their wellbeing.”
One of Borough Care’s homes, Wellcroft in Gatley, has linked up with a group called Generational Gatley, which includes parents and children from Gatley and the surrounding areas. Residents at Wellcroft interact with the children and together they participate in a range of activities, including craft sessions, playing with toys, playing games and enjoying a sing song. One of the most popular activities is a nursery rhyme sing song, which brings back lots of happy memories for residents.
