Imagine being in an environment in which every door looks the same and everyday tasks such as finding the bedroom, going to the toilet and washing become stressful. Imagine sitting in the same chair, in the same room, doing the same thing day in and day out.
A bland, boring and repetitive environment within a care home is not only stressful for residents living with dementia, but can also put a strain on operational costs.
With many care homes being forced to tighten their budgets, implementing environmental changes is sometimes hard to keep at the top of the agenda. However, with 850,000 people living with dementia in the UK, 60 per cent of whom are receiving care, introducing a dementia friendly environment is a significant factor in the care and treatment of residents.
