Key construction stage marked

Representatives from construction contractor Stepnell, care home provider Baycroft (part of One Housing) and care home developer Frontier gathered to celebrate a ‘high point’ in the construction of two new state-of the-art Bedfordshire care homes.

Stepnell site manager David Beasley put into place the final roof tile at the new cutting-edge facility in Hitchin Road, Fairfield while Stepnell project manager Mark Glanville positioned the final roof tile at the Ampthill Road, Flitwick development. The events heralded the completion of the tallest part of each structure - known as the ‘topping out’ of the buildings.

Designed by architect Harris Irwin Associates, the care homes will deliver stylish and contemporary accommodation with each offering 75 en-suite bedrooms, plus extensive communal facilities for leisure and entertainment. Both homes will offer a cinema room, gym, café, hair and beauty salon, guest accommodation as well as a children’s play area for visitors.

Following completion of the roof structures, the construction teams are now moving on to complete the external and internal finishing with each home on schedule for completion in May 2019. The first residents will move in during June 2019.

Baycroft managing director Andrew Winstanley says: “We are excited to be at this topping out stage of the projects and close to introducing two beautiful, high-quality care homes in Bedfordshire. It has been a pleasure to partner with Stepnell and Frontier as we all shared an aspirational vision for these homes.”

“Our topping out event marks an important moment in the construction programme for these high-specification care home buildings,” says Stepnell construction director Bill Haynes. “We were delighted to join with Baycroft and Frontier to celebrate and now look forward to completing these fantastic facilities which will deliver ‘new generation’-style care accommodation for residents in Bedfordshire.”

The Stepnell team began work on two construction contracts, each valued at £8 million, to deliver the two care homes just over a year ago.

Luke Harris, head of construction for Frontier, comments: “We are very pleased to be partnering with both Baycroft and Stepnell across these two projects and today signifies a significant moment for Frontier as a care home developer. We continue to watch the projects develop and are excited to see these two luxurious care homes evolve.”
