Better support for the elderly

Care England, the largest representative body for independent providers of adult social care, has welcomed the NHS Long Term Plan but voiced concerns about the lack of integration.

Professor Martin Green OBE, chief executive of Care England, says: "We welcome the recognition that the NHS should offer better support to people living in care homes. As long ago as 2008, Care England identified the difficulties of getting appropriate NHS support for people living in care homes ‘Can We Afford the Doctor’.

"The challenge for the NHS, and indeed the entire system, will be a cultural one. It is important that in the future we move towards a fully integrated system, where the money that is available is used to deliver outcomes for citizens, rather than the maintenance of organisations. Care England is committed to working with the Government on a long-term strategy for the NHS, and a long-term strategy for Social Care"
