The manager of a Windsor care home has been announced as the UK’s best dementia care manager in a prestigious national awards ceremony.
Shahnaaz Mohamad, manager of Sandown Park Care Home on Vale Road, received this recognition at the national Dementia Care Awards ceremony held in Brighton.
The National Dementia Care Awards recognise the very best people in the dementia care sector, where exceptional work and contributions make better, person-centred care a reality.
With over 20 years' working as a leader in the care industry, Shahnaaz is seen as an expert among her colleagues and has honed her skills as a dementia specialist, delivering care based on dignity, respect and innovation to the residents at Sandown Park Care Home.
The purpose-built home provides specialist residential care for up to 90 people, many of whom live with dementia. Under Shahnaaz’s leadership, it was rated as ‘outstanding’ in January 2018 by the Care Quality Commission, placing it in the top one per cent of care homes in the country. The home was also shortlisted for its garden, which has been designed to provide multisensory support to residents living with dementia.
Shahnaaz’s daily work focuses on the smooth running of the home, ensuring that resources are in place to provide a high quality service to the home’s residents, living across three floors. Her forward thinking approach underpinned her nomination, as she set out to create an environment in which those with dementia could thrive, developing innovative interior and exterior spaces at the home.
Shahnaaz says: “I’m really quite shocked and humbled to have been announced as the winner. To me, delivering compassionate care is just ‘what I do’. I believe in doing the right thing and looking after people, so I would never provide anything other than wholly compassionate care.
“I would like to accept the award on behalf of the entire team at Sandown Park, as everything we do is a team effort. I describe my care and my leadership as ‘from the heart’. Our home is based on compassion, dignity, respect and care and our residents are treated as if they are our own family.
“I look forward to celebrating this wonderful achievement with my team and all of our residents.”
