Inspectors from the Care Quality Commission have awarded Monkscroft care home in Cheltenham the highest possible ranking of ‘outstanding’, following its latest surprise inspection.
The home, which is run by The Orders of St John Care Trust, was inspected on 21 and 22 May and officers particularly recognised the outstanding quality of care being delivered in the home.
Inspectors applauded the ‘excellent’ relationships employees form with other colleagues and the way they put residents at the centre of their care. The report says: “People were supported in an individualised way that encouraged them to be as independent as possible. Relatives told us they felt the home went above and beyond to ensure people had the best quality of life. We received no negative feedback. Staff told us there was an open culture and they enjoyed working at the home.”
The care offered at Monkscroft was described as “outstandingly caring”. The report said: “People were able to test and try new opportunities to explore areas of independence they had previously not considered. The registered manager and staff were committed to providing the best possible care.”
The report also noted the personalised care at the home, commending employees for going the extra mile for residents. It said of a resident who spoke only Cantonese: “The whole staff team at the home had discussed and implemented ways to ensure the person was not socially isolated and bridged the gaps in communication. This had a significant and positive impact on their wellbeing.”
Monkscroft home manager, Bogumil Cwiklak says: “This is an extremely special moment for everyone at Monkscroft. Being recognised for our work is one of the best feelings in the world.
"We are overwhelmed with gratitude and we want to share the achievement with the people who helped us obtain this very special result including those who live and work at Monkscroft, as well as their families and our volunteers.
"We would also like to recognise the support given to us by local community organisations, multidisciplinary teams and the Orders of St John Care Trust for the values it promotes, which are the foundation of this success.”
Dan Hayes, chief executive of The Orders of St John Care Trust says: “We are all thrilled that Monkscroft has received a well deserved 'outstanding' rating. The home has benefited from the exceptional leadership first of Karen Cummings and then Bogumil Cwiklak. Their passion for personalised care, dignity, and community inclusion has been taken on by all of their colleagues and the result is the full lives led by residents at the home. We are proud to be associated with Monkscroft’s success and will share learning across all our homes.”
