Why we must continue to invest in dementia care

As we continue to implement the dementia strategy, raise awareness of the condition and fundraise for research, we hope that all care providers will join together and initiate similar practices, says Avnish Goyal, managing director of Hallmark Care Homes and chair of Care England

Like many other UK care providers, we care for residents living with dementia. Therefore, we have seen first hand the devastating effect it can have on an individual and their loved ones. With over 850,000 people living with dementia in the UK according to the Alzheimer’s Society, we are also acutely aware that dementia is a growing challenge and because of this we have invested heavily in dementia care provision.

We have done so because a significant number of our residents live with dementia, whether it has been diagnosed or not, so we have a responsibility to do everything we can to help support these individuals to live an active and fulfilled life.

We have invested in dementia care firstly by launching our dementia strategy, which was a culmination of a year long project looking at best practice and consulting with around 100 residents, 75 relatives and 100 staff members to come up with a plan that is appropriately called ‘Together’.
