Celebrating Armed Forces Day in style

A celebration to show appreciation of the work of the Armed Forces was held throughout Ashmere Derbyshire, and featured a celebration of music, residents talking about their own personal experiences and staff dressing up to hold reminiscence sessions.

The event was held as part of Armed Forces Day, the annual national campaign that gives everyone the opportunity to show their support for the men and women of the Armed Forces past and present, including currently serving troops, service families, reservists, veterans and cadets.

Sarah Dixon, event organiser, says: “It was an absolute pleasure for Ashmere to get involved with something that means so much to our residents, they enjoyed listening to the music and talking about their memories of serving in the armed forces”

During the celebrations at Valley Lodge, there was Glenn Miller playing in the background and Sam Cave (training manager) and Courtney Johnson (activity co-ordinator) dressed in authentic costumes spent time talking to the residents about their own personal experiences.

“I used to be in the RAF when I was a young girl and I loved it. It's nice to remember and celebrate like this" saya Brenda, aged 88 from Valley Lodge in Matlock.

"The UK Armed Forces defend the country and its interests. Every day of the year they are busy working around the world, promoting peace, delivering aid, tackling drug smugglers and providing security and fighting terrorism," she adds.
