How safety of movement can promote independence

Good design principles and the considered use of colour and pattern within flooring applications can have a significant impact on the wellbeing of care home residents, says Catherine Helliker, marketing manager, danfloor UK

Anyone living in a care home environment will value even a small improvement in their level of independence, which in turn promotes dignity, control and an element of self fulfilment. If independence is missing from a person’s life, they may feel defeated, depressed or begin to doubt their own ability to care for themselves, which will ultimately have a negative affect on their mental wellbeing.

Ensuring an environment is designed to assist with independent living is therefore an essential consideration. Freedom and safety of movement around a building and communication between residents, staff and visitors are important elements in maintaining independence within a care facility.

Statistics show that older people living in care homes are three times more likely to fall than older people living in their own homes, with 10 times more hip fractures occurring in care homes than in any other environment.1Falls can result in pain, disability, loss of confidence and independence and a general decline in quality of life.
