Putting a greater focus on personalised care

Dan Hayes, chief executive, The Orders of St John Care Trust (OSJCT), explains why personalised care is key to the trust’s ethos and looks at how other homes can place a greater focus on this vital element of care

The Orders of St John Care Trust (OSJCT) has just received its latest ‘outstanding’ rating from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) for Gregory House, a residential care home in Grantham in Lincolnshire. Gregory House is the second home run by the not-for-profit trust to achieve the highest rating and was praised for its level of personalised care.

Personalised care is something every care home would claim and can no doubt show it is offering to residents. Because tailoring care to each individual is a requirement under the Health and Social Care Act, care plans in every well performing home will detail someone’s likes and dislikes, the activities they enjoy and how colleagues are doing their best to meet these preferences. However, this isn’t enough to make a home outstanding.

We all recognise the difference small things can make when it comes to interacting with other people. “Good morning!” from a staff member at a shop checkout, the offer of a seat on the bus or having a door held open for you can transform how you feel. These small gestures can be especially impactful in situations where you feel nervous, unsure or even embarrassed.
