Many people still have negative views about care homes, associating them with a sense of dread and loss, which is reinforced by sensationalist journalism and isolated issues, but this has to change, says Avnish Goyal, managing director of Hallmark Care Homes and chair of Care England
Despite a great deal of negative press about elderly care provision, through stronger regulation, operators have risen to the challenge and the quality of care and facilities has improved dramatically. We are seeing more homes rated ‘good’ and ‘outstanding’ than ever before; more than 78 per cent of homes inspected last year by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) were rated ‘good’ while two per cent were considered ‘outstanding’. The standard of activity provision and food in care homes has also improved and the public need to be made aware of this.
So how do we challenge misconceptions associated with care homes? There are many things we can do as a sector, but taking part in Care Home Open Day is a great place to start.
Care Home Open Days is a UK wide initiative run by Care England, which this year will take place on Saturday 21 April. The theme will be ‘linking communities’, with its overall aim being to connect care homes with their local communities, challenge misconceptions about care and showcase the excellent services that are available at the heart of the community.
