April Dobson, head of dementia innovation at The Abbeyfield Society, describes an initiative to promote the benefit to care home residents of creating art through a series of exhibitions of their work that were held across the country
In 2016, The Abbeyfield Society launched a series of art exhibitions called Golden Galleries to showcase the work created by older people living in Abbeyfield care homes across the country.
The initiative was intended to be a celebration of older people, who are as unique and individual as the artwork they have created. It aimed to highlight the important therapeutic benefits art brings to older people, providing a means of expression particularly for those living with dementia and/or other medical conditions. It also aimed to challenge people’s perceptions and encourage everyone to look past the condition and at the individual instead.
The Abbeyfield Society worked with the National Alliance for Museums, Health and Wellbeing to identify museums and galleries that were willing to lend space within their prestigious sites to exhibit the work of residents.
