Working with care provider Notaro Homes, Boon Brown Architects designed Casa di Lusso, a care facility that offers hotel standard accommodation with all the clinical facilities required to provide dementia care. Architectural associate at Boon Brown, Mike Payne, discusses the project
Completed in October 2016, the £11 million Casa di Lusso showcases some of the latest thinking in care home design, while providing much needed elderly, general nursing and dementia care facilities in Bridgwater, Somerset.
The original, contemporary building incorporates 64 single bedrooms, self-contained units for low dependency residents and 24 assisted living suites for those with either a learning disability or mental health need. In addition to living accommodation, Casa di Lusso provides communal living and dining rooms, a community café, cinema and café, hair salon, therapy treatment rooms and themed garden, summer and sun rooms. As well as enclosed private space in the form of roof terracing and balconies, the home is surrounded by landscaped green space, including a dementia garden, a pirate play ship for children and a petting farm.
Casa di Lusso has been designed to build residents’ confidence and help them to maintain their independence, with the combination of accommodation and amenities enabling its services to be tailored to meet the needs of the individual. This flexibility also allows care to evolve, facilitating good transitional care should frailty and dependency levels increase.
