Bupa’s Hill View Care Home is planning to install a new tuck shop, thanks to a generous donation from a Clydebank pub.
Each year, customers and colleagues at the Mountblow Bar on Dumbarton Road rally together to raise money for a local good cause. This year Cheryl Sweeney, a member of the bar staff, chose Bupa’s Hill View Care Home to be the recipient, as her grandparents were residents at the home until they passed away.
Locals came together to raise a staggering £2,070 for the home, and plans are now underway to build a sweet shop complete with bus stop and bench within the grounds of the care home. Both items have proven beneficial for residents with dementia, these will be an added benefit to the already dementia-friendly community in the home.
The sweet shop will be set up like an old fashioned stall where residents can buy their favourite treats while remembering fond memories.
The mock bus stop is also being installed to benefit residents with dementia. The concept was originally developed in Germany, and has since proved hugely beneficial in other Bupa care homes. Residents with dementia often go through moments of wanting to go on a journey, sometimes to visit their old homes or family. The mock bus stop offers them this feeling without leaving the home and means the care team are close by to support residents.
Cheryl says: “Each year, we take some time to think of a cause we could donate to which would benefit the community. This year, it was an easy decision to make and made perfect sense.
“My mum, Kate, is the manager of the pub and both her parents – my grandparents – were residents at Hill View. That’s why we wanted to give something back to say thank you for the fantastic care they received there.
“We really like holding our annual fundraising events as it’s a great way to get the community working together. We’re hugely impressed with the amount we managed to raise this year and are very excited about the plans the home has for its village.”
To raise the funds, the bar held football matches between staff, customers and against other local businesses, as well as auctions with memorabilia from both Celtic Football Club and Rangers Football Club, party nights and raffles.
Corinne Reid, home manager at Bupa’s Hill View Care Home, says: “Everyone was blown away by the huge amount that Mountblow Bar has donated to the home. It’s an amazing accomplishment and we’re so grateful to them.
“While the home was already well equipped to help residents with dementia, we had a few suggestions on how to use the donation to further enhance our facilities. With the addition of the sweet shop and the bus stop, we hope to provide the best local setting for those with the condition.
“We can’t wait to see the finished result and the residents are really excited to start to use it. Everyone at the home would like to say a massive thank you to Mountblow Bar, the staff and all of the customers who donated to make this possible.”
