Maintaining an infection free care environment

Drew Heald, a Bio-Rite franchisee, discusses the challenges associated with infection control in the care home environment and how to manage them to ensure that the health of vulnerable residents is not put at risk

The challenge of maintaining an infection free environment for the vulnerable people living in care homes is an ongoing one, and the media regularly report outbreaks of common infections such as Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus(MRSA), Clostridium difficileor norovirus in institutions and hospitals across the UK. Worldwide, there has been a steady increase in infectious diseases, resulting in an estimated 13 million deaths every year.1

The risk of infection can be increased by combining occasionally poor hand hygiene, stretched staff resources and sometimes a lack of knowledge about how to deal with such threats rapidly and effectively.
