Phil Mangnall, Jaga Heating Products, discusses the importance of safe, energy efficient, responsive heating in care homes
As the ageing population continues to expand, social care is a necessary, complex and growing sector. As part of this sector, care homes enable people – particularly those who require some extra practical and physical help – to live their lives as comfortably and independently as possible.
Yet the operators of care homes face a constant struggle. Every decision they make is focussed on the health, safety and wellbeing of their residents. On that basis, anything that can help to improve these standards should be considered.
Of course, the main factor that influences what improvements can and cannot be implemented in the majority of care homes is financial resources. If, therefore, there are opportunities to improve residents’ health and standard of living while also saving money, how can such a win-win situation be ignored? In running care homes, one of the most prominent issues affecting both the care and comfort of residents and the overall cost is heating. Because care homes are effectively in operation 24 hours a day, seven days a week, energy usage is one of the highest outgoings on the balance sheet. But there are heating options available that can help exceed residents’ expectations of their living environment and positively contribute to the operator’s bottom line. In this scenario, money saved is money that can be reallocated to improving the overall quality of care.
