Exemplar Health Care, a leading provider of specialist nursing care for adults with acute physical, mental and learning disabilities, has announced that it has the backing of a new investor, Agilitas, to support the growth and development of Exemplar, especially with its new-build programme.
Exemplar is embarking on an investment program that includes plans for approximately a dozen new homes. The group also plans to create a number of step-out units linked to existing homes that will extend care pathways for adults who are ready for more independent living, but still require close care supervision nearby.
The new homes are expected to create more than 1,500 new nursing and care jobs across Yorkshire, Humberside, the Midlands and the North West. The first new home, which is located in the King’s Heath area of Birmingham, is already under construction and is expected to open next year.
Exemplar Group, based in Rotherham, already operates 25 high quality, purpose-built specialist nursing homes in these regions, providing more than 700 beds. Exemplar is a significant employer with over 2,100 nursing staff, carers, therapists and support staff working in its homes. More than 60 regional CCGs, 40 local authorities and several NHS hospital trusts currently place adults with complex needs with Exemplar.
In 2000 Exemplar started refocusing its business to reflect the conviction of its leadership team that adults with complex nursing care needs and requiring residential care, should be looked after in appropriate specialist settings, rather than in more general care home facilities. Exemplar now focuses solely on providing care for adults who have suffered traumatic injury, are suffering from long term degenerative neurological conditions, experiencing acute mental illness or living with severe learning disabilities. Its homes provide unique, well-equipped settings where the needs of their service users can be supported by appropriately trained staff, and where a ‘community’ environment contributes directly to their well-being and rehabilitation.
Commenting on the announcement, Euan Craig, managing director of Exemplar says: “We are dedicated to bringing an end to cycles of failed placements by carefully tailoring the care we offer to meet these highly complex needs.
"We are proud that the outcomes we achieve enhance people’s lives and better meet the needs of the CCGs, trusts, local authorities and families that we serve. “
“Exemplar staff are committed and highly motivated and they make our homes extraordinary places, and we will continue to invest in their skills and training as we grow. Everyone at Exemplar is looking forward to bringing our high standards of care to far more people suffering acute illness and injury.”
Martin Calderbank, managing partner at Agilitas, says: “Exemplar is one of the regional leaders in the care of individuals who live day to day with these complex conditions. We are excited by the opportunity to help Euan and his team expand their operations and make Exemplar’s high standards of care available to many more people.”
