A growing number of people who access acute hospital services have dementia, and the number of people living with dementia is expected to double over the next 30 years.
There is increasing evidence that the environment of care in hospitals can have a significant and detrimental effect on patients with dementia, leading to additional distress and confusion and it’s often the small things that make a difference – whether clear signage, light and airy rooms or good handrails, and the Hospedia screens at the bedside of 70,000 UK hospital patients is the ideal communication tool in displaying information in a dementia friendly manner – to assist in general orientation and comfort for the patient.
The solution has been developed in conjunction with Chelsea & Westminster Hospital, The Royal Free Hospital and Broomfield Hospital (Mid Essex Hospitals NHS Trust) and has already been rolled out to these sites, with more hospitals to follow soon.
The Dementia Orientation Screen solution can be easily activated by a carer or other staff member when it is felt the patient would benefit from this. This can be particularly useful at night time when patients with dementia often become most confused, and would benefit from the ‘at a glance’ orientation trigger, as the screen displays a range of important information in a clear and simple format, including: hospital and ward name, the day, date and time, (which is also inferred by highlighting the next meal (eg ‘your next meal is breakfast’). The background screen colour also reflects the time of day. As a high percentage of patient with dementia also have sensory impairment, there is also a ‘sound’ function that speaks the screen (developed with the support of The University of Edinburgh).

It is hoped that the feature will offer comfort and reassurance to support many patients during their hospital stay.
