Skills for Care launches new ‘Building allyship’ programme

Skills for Care has launched a new ‘Building allyship’ programme for social care leaders and managers.

The two-day programme – which starts in November – is for leaders who want to take positive action by actively supporting and championing colleagues from marginalised groups and be part of building an inclusive workplace culture.

It will provide the awareness, confidence, and practical tools required to be an effective ally for equity and inclusion at work and beyond.

Led by respected inclusion expert Hári Sewell, the programme will cover:

  • understanding the true meaning of allyship – and why passive support isn’t enough
  • recognising privilege and bias – and learn how to challenge both with confidence
  • developing empathy and compassion – through reflective, human-centred exercises
  • building advocacy and communication skills – to speak up and influence change
  • practicing bystander intervention techniques – using the 5Ds framework
  • creating a personal action plan – turning values into real-world impact

The programme will comprise a mix of interactive discussions, practical exercises, and shared reflection, leaving attendees empowered, informed, and ready to take meaningful, ongoing action.

Jane Brightman, director of workforce development for Skills for Care, said: “We are delighted to launch this new allyship programme that will empower social care leaders to make real change in their organisations and beyond.

“Allyship means taking action to support and advocate for others. It’s an ongoing commitment to equity and inclusion that helps create a workplace where everyone feels safe, valued, and able to thrive.”
