Integrated retirement community chooses Nobi smart lamps

Burnham Waters retirement community in Essex has chosen Nobi as the supplier for its fall detection and health monitoring system. Residents will have the option for each room to be fitted with Nobi’s innovative, AI-powered smart lamp, which detects and helps to prevent falls in older adults.

Nobi is a European provider of innovative technologies in elderly care, that launched in the UK and Ireland in September, 2022. Burnham Waters is currently under development in Burnham-on-Crouch, Essex.

Should a resident fall in their home, the intelligent Nobi lamp will detect this immediately and speak to the resident, asking if they are okay. In the event of no response or a call for help, the intelligent lamp is pre-programmed to alert Burnham Waters’ care providers. The smart lamp will also be able to open the resident’s door in the case of an emergency.

At the resident’s discretion, Nobi’s smart lamps also have the ability to send an image showing where in the room the fall has occurred. These images provide care staff with important information to not only decide what assistance is needed immediately after a fall, but also to help prevent falls in the future. This image can be converted to an abstract figure to ensure privacy.

The powerful processor inside the lamp allows Nobi to constantly analyse images and detect the position of a body. Based on this, Nobi immediately knows when it is dealing with a fall.

Aside from identifying accidents, Nobi also aims to help prevent falls as it continuously optimises its own processes. When a resident sits upright in bed at night, for example, the lamp will shine soft light upwards to gently illuminate the room. Then, should the resident stand up to go to the bathroom, it will illuminate the entire room.

Nobi co-founder and CEO Roeland Pelgrims said: “We’re delighted to play a part in Burnham Waters and support the safety and wellbeing of its residents. Our technology gives families peace of mind that their loved ones risk of falling is minimised and that, if they do fall, the right people will be there to support them quickly. As the building work for Burnham Waters continues, we’re excited to see Nobi’s technology rolled out at such a prestigious development to help residents live a happy and safe retirement.”
