Having helped her clients win Pinders Healthcare Design Awards in 2016, 2020, and 2022, Kerry Southern-Reason, managing director of The Care Home Interiors Company, offers her insights, knowledge, and tips for securing the holy grail of care home design awards
A winning Pinders Award entry is when the project team all pull together to create the best building they can; this happens 18 months to two years before the entry. For us personally, it starts with the interior scheme plans – we review the plans with the project team, we tweak and make changes, in order to make the absolute best of the home layout and the site as a whole.
It is not just about making things look pretty – the judging team will want to see demonstration and illustration of that. We take the time to consider every last detail, such as the best use of light and how our knowledge of circadian rhythms might influence our final decision. From the ceiling coving to the skirting board to the colour of the carpet, absolutely everything in that home is an opportunity for us to make aging lives better. Demonstrating this level of detail and consideration is exactly what the Pinders judges will be looking for
A winning entry is more than a pack that says how wonderful you or your home is. It is not just something that happens on the night, nor is it something that happens because of a completed entry – it happens years before. For us, it all began with accumulating experience – 15 years, 20 years, and so on. Our first break into social care was on an assisted living complex for Bovis 20 years ago – that is how long it has taken us to develop the knowledge to create an outstanding care environment that will bring enjoyment to those who have made it their home
