Care Home Open Week celebrates social care

Care Home Open Week 2022 takes place on 27 June to 3 July.

After a successful (and predominantly virtual) 2021, Care Home Open Week returns this week to connect care homes across the UK with local communities, giving them the chance to showcase their facilities and care teams.

Organised by Championing Social Care, Care Home Open Week is the perfect opportunity for the public to find out more about what happens in their local care home, something they might otherwise not get the chance to do. It is also the perfect chance to celebrate all the great things about living and working within the social care sector.

During Care Home Open Week 2021, care homes rose to the challenge to host virtual events. Some of these included schools running virtual buddying days and music sessions with older people, while some providers hosted blue light breakfasts, inviting blue light workers to collect a free drive-through breakfast to thank them for their support.

Virtual tours via Facebook or YouTube also featured. Home managers walked around their homes sharing their facilities and environment bringing their homes to life with anecdotes and stories.

According to Championing Social Care, after the 2021 Care Home Open Week programme, 85.7 per cent of care homes agreed or strongly agreed that Care Home Open Week helped to promote their facilities, activities and services, while 71.4 per cent of care homes strongly agreed it encouraged greater community engagement and volunteering.

Mitesh Dhanak, chairman of the Care Home Open Week volunteer team, said: “We are excited to be hosting Care Home Open Week again this year as we recognise the importance of community connections and we hope that this week will enable participating care homes to build long-lasting and flourishing relationships with their local communities, be that with individuals or with organisations such as schools or local businesses.”

By registering, each care home will join a national programme to champion and celebrate social care and will appear on an interactive map so that local communities can find out about the events planned.
