Dementia: the refreshing benefits of hydration

Dementia need not be an ‘inevitable’ by-product of old age. In fact, there are simple steps we can all take to combat its onset.

Many of us have been affected by dementia in one way or another. We are all keen to do whatever we can to reduce our chances of developing this debilitating and frightening condition later in life.

While there is no simple answer, many factors undoubtedly come into play. Here, hydration specialist Aquarate examines the important relationship between hydration and dementia and discusses what steps care home residents and staff can take to reduce the risks and difficulties associated with dehydration in the care home environment.

We have all heard the advice that we ought to drink six to eight glasses of water a day to keep our bodies healthy - but what about keeping our brains healthy? Our body is made up of 60% water and all our cells (including brain cells) rely on this water to function properly. When body water levels are too low, our brain cells cannot function properly, leading to cognitive problems.
