How care homes should prepare for ‘no jab, no job’ laws

Julian Cox, partner and head of employment at London law firm BLM, explores the legal implications of the government’s mandatory vaccination policy and sets out practical steps care homes can take.

Following an announcement on 16 June by Health Secretary Matt Hancock, it has been confirmed that staff in care homes with older adult residents in England must have two doses of Covid-19 vaccine or risk unemployment.

The legislation, which will come into force in October, is subject to parliamentary approval.

Care staff will have 16 weeks to have the jab - or face being redeployed away from frontline care or losing their jobs where redeployment is not possible. Only staff who can prove they are medically exempt from having the vaccine will not be affected.
