Clean indoor air – the key to improving health outcomes

Naeem Walji, principal at clean air technology distributors 4th Wave Technology, discusses how prioritising clean air within care homes can improve the life expectancy and quality of life of residents, as well as mitigating the spread of coronavirus.

The adverse health effects of pollution are well-documented, with air pollution causing up to 36,000 deaths each year in the UK, and a total of 500,000 deaths each year worldwide from various diseases attributed to outdoor air pollution.

However, with the levels of indoor air pollutants being higher than outdoors, and older people being pre-disposed to health conditions triggered by pollutants, the urgency with which clean indoor air within care settings needs to be prioritised is rapidly increasing.

The current pandemic has changed the way that we view health and safety measures within the social care sector forever, and the increased use of technology within the sector stands to not only mitigate transmission of coronavirus, but also to increase the life expectancy and quality of life of residents.
