HC-One resident celebrates 105th birthday

A resident at a Birmingham based HC-One care home celebrated her 105th birthday surrounded by family and friends, with guest of honour Lord Mayor Councillor Anne Underwood.

Minnie Ratheram, who has lived at The Orchards for nearly five years, enjoyed an afternoon party with close friends Jim and Anne, and all the homes residents and staff.

Born in 1912, several historical events took place during Minnie’s year of birth, including the sinking of the RMS Titanic and the establishment of the Royal Flying Corps.

Growing up in rural Warwickshire, Minnie was determined not to work on the family farm, but instead travelled to London at a young age to become a cook. After a year’s training, she joined the Navy, Army and Air Force Institutes (NAFFA) and served as a cook for two and a half years.

After a further six years with the fire service, Minnie moved to Shipston-on-Stour to look after her poorly mother. She met her beloved Alfred and was married in 1961.

Minnie is still a very active resident at The Orchards, participating in activities, outings and the resident’s group. When asked about her youthfulness, Minnie says: “Have no regrets, work hard and live good!”

HC-One care home manager, Lisa Brazenell, comments: “We were very proud to be able to celebrate such a special birthday with a very kind and caring lady. Minnie loved meeting the Lord Mayor and it was a very special day for a very special lady."
