The British Healthcare Trades Association (BHTA) has launched a guide to draw attention to the treatment of pressure ulcers, the treatment of which cost the NHS in excess of 2.6 billion per annum.
In the UK annually it is estimated that around 400,000 individuals develop a new pressure ulcer. Pressure ulcers are often called pressure sores or bed sores, and the damage to the skin and underlying tissue is caused by pressure to that part of the body. The most common cause of pressure ulcers is lying or sitting in the same position for too long.
BHTA members who are involved in the beds, seating and positioning sectors are supporting the campaign to raise awareness across the UK and with healthcare professionals. They will also be supporting the Worldwide Stop Pressure Ulcers day on 16 November, which is a campaign to raise awareness globally, and attending several conferences and exhibitions in Belfast and the NEC Birmingham.
Steve Perry, marketing and communications manager for BHTA, says: “BHTA understands the value and importance for us and our members of working together with healthcare professionals to ensure we all help prevent pressure ulcers in all caring environments.”
The guide is available as a downloadable document from the BHTA website at: www.bhta.com/news
