Exeter home rated 'outstanding'

A care home in Exeter that goes out of its way to establish links with the local community has been rated 'outstanding' by the Care Quality Commission following an inspection in May.

Inspectors rated The Old Rectory Nursing Home, in Old Tiverton Road, Exeter 'outstanding' for being effective, caring, responsive to people’s needs and well led and 'good' for being safe. Overall the service was rated as 'outstanding'.

The Old Rectory Nursing Home is a care home with nursing for older people and people living with dementia.  It is registered for a maximum of 47 people.

Deborah Ivanova, deputy chief inspector of Adult Social Care, says: “The Old Rectory Nursing Home put people at the heart of their service and it was clear that the provider and manager were passionate about providing a high quality, individualised service and regularly promoted and shared this with people, relatives and the staff team.

“Their ethos is to create a family orientated feel and to ensure when people move into their care home setting they don’t have to leave their life at the door

“To receive an 'outstanding' rating overall is a real achievement, and I would like to congratulate all the staff for the work they do in providing an 'outstanding' service to the people in their care.”

Inspectors found that people were involved in developing activities that complemented their individual hobbies and interests. Links with the local community had been established and people were supported to participate in community events that provided them with a sense of purpose and wellbeing. This was enhanced by social communal areas such as a country style pub and beer garden, lifestyle kitchen and café offering specialist coffee and snacks as well as areas available for family parties and a cinema club.

Staff and managers were always visible and worked effectively with people, relatives and friends and were kind, caring and compassionate, often going  out of their way to provide people with high quality, care based on their individual needs.
