Derbyshire nursing home is rated 'outstanding'

The Care Quality Commission has found the quality of care provided by Thornhill House in Bakewell, Derbyshire, to be 'outstanding' overall following an inspection in December.

Thornhill House is managed by The John Thornhill Memorial Trust. It provides accommodation and nursing care for up to 19 people, some of whom are living with dementia.

Inspectors found staff were caring and compassionate and people were being provided with safe, responsive, caring, effective and well-led care.

Under CQC’s programme of inspections, all adult social care services are being given a rating according to whether they are safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led.

St John’s Court was rated 'outstanding' overall, 'outstanding' for being caring and responsive and 'good' for being safe and well-led, effective and safe.

Rob Assall-Marsden, CQC’s head of inspection for adult social care in the central region, says: “Our inspection team were really impressed by the level of care and support offered at Thornhill House.

“There was a strong commitment to developing caring, respectful relationships with people and they were supported by staff who demonstrated compassion and empathy.

“There was a strong commitment by the management to deliver a high standard of personalised care with continued improvement based on the views of people who used the service.

“People and their relatives said staff were extremely kind, caring, and thoughtful and people were afforded privacy and treated with dignity and respect.

“Residents received a personalised service which encouraged meaningful, imaginative activities and opportunities for people to pursue and develop hobbies. Links within the community were pursued to ensure people were not socially isolated and could enjoy fulfilling relationships.

“All of this meant people received a high standard of care, which is why it has been rated 'outstanding'.”

Andrea Sutcliffe, chief inspector of adult social care, says: “The quality of care which our inspectors found here was exceptional and I am very pleased that we can celebrate the service’s achievements.

“An outstanding service is the result of a tremendous amount of hard work and commitment. I would like to thank and congratulate everyone involved.”
